S-Style Pickups
Buttes:
This is the familiar, yet inspiring, sound that could be heard from the Sunset Strip and Woodstock when young players were becoming legends to the neighborhood pub where factory workers and accountants forget about the day-to-day grind and become rock stars for a few hours on a Saturday night.
Buttes are an S-style medium output pickup set made with Alnico 5 magnets and classic late-60's pole piece stagger. They offer full sounding neck and middle pickups and an overwound bridge pickup to provide mid-range bite and a little extra push for a dirty amplifier. The bridge pickup has a steel backplate to help round out the sound and reduce some of the shrill high end frequencies sometimes associated with Strat bridge pickups. The middle pickup is reverse-wound, reverse-polarity (RWRP) for hum cancellation in the 2 and 4 positions. Buttes are wax potted and have cloth pushback wire.
Neck pickup: 5.7k ohms and inductance of 2.3H, Middle 6.2k and 2.4H, Bridge 6.6k and 2.8H. (Measurements may vary as each pickup is hand wound.)
T-Style Pickups
One-oh-Ones:
The sound of Nashville which, like the city itself, is not limited to chicken-pickin' and country twang.
One-oh-Ones are a T-style set made with Alnico 5 magnets. The bridge pickup is medium output for the classic T-style character and bite and the neck pickup is lower output, providing a bright, yet full and balanced sound. The bridge pickup has a copper plated steel backplate and is wrapped in black cloth rope while the neck pickup is reverse-wound, reverse-polarity (RWRP) to provide hum cancellation in the middle position and has a chrome plated nickel cover. Both pickups are wax potted and have cloth pushback wire.
Neck pickup: 5.0k ohms and inductance of 1.8H. Bridge pickup 6.8k and 3.1H. (Measurements may vary as each pickup is hand wound.)
Humbuckers
Tail Fin Humbucker:
In the 1950’s the Chevy Bel Air was cool, powerful, and functional with it’s V8 engine, roomy interior, shiny chrome, and tail fins. Around that same time, humbucking pickups were showing up in guitar shops and also proved to be cool, powerful, and functional.
The Tail Fin Humbucker is a traditional P.A.F. style humbucker set that offers fullness, clarity, and dynamics while retaining high end. These vintage sounding pickups are capable of pushing a dirty amp and will clean up nicely with your guitar's volume knob. Tail Fins use Alnico 5 magnets, vintage braided wire, are wax potted to minimize noise, and come with a nickel cover in a variety of finishes.
Neck pickup: 7.3k ohms and inductance of 4.2H. Bridge pickup: 7.7k and 4.6H. (Measurements may vary slightly as each pickup is hand wound.)
Heshbucker Humbucker:
In the 80's, the term "Hesher" was used to describe someone with long hair and a leather jacket who liked their music loud. But some of these same people were complex individuals who read books, appreciated art, and had life goals.
Heshbuckers are complex higher output humbuckers that will push an amp but will also offer brighter single coil clean tones as a split coil. Heshbuckers have an Alnico 2 magnet in the neck pickup and Alnico 5 in the bridge pickup. They come with 4 conductor wire, are wax potted, and are available in a variety of cover finishes.
Neck pickup: 10.9k ohm and inductance of 5.3H. Bridge pickup: 12.0k ohm and 6.2H. (Measurements may vary as each pickup is hand wound.)
P-90's
Tail-Wagger P-90:
Some dog lovers prefer purebreds who are primped, proper, and well trained. Others prefer a fuzzy friend with personality, energy, and no fear of playing in the mud. Good Land Pickups Tail-Waggers is the P-90 pickup set for the later.
Tail-Waggers are raw and punchy with sweet overtones and lots of character. The neck pickup is full sounding with clear high and low end and pleasant cleans that will easily go to edge of breakup with a turn of the volume knob. The bridge pickup is mid-focused with plenty of output to let your favorite dirty amp or distortion pedal live up to its full potential. Tail Waggers come in soapbox or dogear style and covers are available in black or cream.
Neck pickup: 7.3k ohms with inductance of 6.0H. Bridge pickup: 8.2k and 7.2H. (Measurements may vary slightly as each pickup is hand wound.)
Vlietist Humbucker Sized P-90:
Vliet Street is the street I grew up on in Milwaukee. This neighborhood was an unusual combination of blue collar functionality and bohemian creativity. Like my old neighborhood, Vlietist Humbucker Sized P-90's are a functional and creative tool for your sound.
Vlietists are a P-90 style single coil pickup with a pair of Alnico 2 magnets in a slightly smaller and thicker bobbin to fit a standard covered humbucker opening. The neck position is sweet and full while the bridge position has a combination of midrange and chime that sounds as good with clean chord strums as it does with distorted power chords. Vlietists come with Nickel covers, vintage braided wire, are wax potted, and the neck pickup is reverse-wound, reverse-polarity (RWRP) to provide hum cancellation in the middle position.
Neck pickup: 8.4k ohms with inductance of 4.7H. Bridge pickup: 10.2k and 6.4H. (Measurements may vary slightly as each pickup is hand wound.)
Loaded Pickguards
SSS Loaded Pickguards:
A variety of SSS loaded pickguards are available. Pickguards are available with any Good Land Pickups single coil Strat set and can be made in white, parchment, cream, and black (please reach out if a color or pickup set you would like is not listed). Loaded pickguards are made with high quality components including CRL switches, CTS potentiometers, Sprague Orange Drop capacitors, and a Kinman style treble bleed. Good Land Pickups loaded Strat style pickguards will fit most common U.S. and Mexican Fender Stratocasters. Drilling may be required depending on the make and model of your particular guitar.
HSS Loaded Pickguards:
HSS Loaded Pickguards use the same high quality material and components as the SSS Loaded Pickguard, but come with a Barrister humbucker in the bridge position. The tone dial closest to the volume dial will control the neck and middle positions while the tone dial closest to the bridge will control the humbucker and has a separate capacitor.
Loaded T-Style Control Plate:
This Loaded T-Style Control Plate is made for two pickup Tele style guitars. It has a wider spacing between the switch and volume control for easier use without bumping the volume. The volume pot has a "vintage taper", which is in between a linear and audio taper, providing a smooth sweep across the dial. A series treble bleed is installed to maintain high end at lower levels without affecting the taper of the pot. This Loaded T-Style Control Plate is made with high quality components such as CRL switch, CTS potentiometers, Sprague Orange Drop capacitors, and cloth pushback wire.
T-Style Set:
Pickups, Loaded Control Plate and Pickguard
This T-Style set includes a set of Good Land Pickups One-Oh-Ones pickups, a loaded control panel, and pickguard. The pickguard will fit most 8-hole U.S. and Mexican Fender Telecasters. Drilling may be required depending on the make and model of your particular guitar.
About
Thank you for visiting Good Land Pickups. Building pickups began with an overwhelming curiosity and passion to learn every aspect of guitar. This journey began over 35 years ago and includes teaching, playing, and recording, in addition to building and modding guitars, amps, and effects. I learned early on that I enjoy working on guitars as much as I enjoy playing them. Building pickups has been very rewarding as there are so many variables that on their own make the slightest difference, but when compiled together become quite noticeable.
Good Land Pickups builds high quality pickups priced for working musicians and hobbyists. Every pickup is built by hand using materials from respected luthier suppliers and is tested before it goes out the door. Good Land Pickups loaded pickguards and control plates are built using CTS potentiometers, CRL switches, Sprague Orange Drop capacitors, treble bleeds, and cloth pushback wire. No shortcuts are ever taken and no project is ever rushed.
